Gone Girl
monologue Broadside
Part B
Inspired Media
These broadsides were inspired by the 2014 movie "Gone Girl".
The goal of Part B was to create an abstract piece using the monologue, but only use text, and only be able to clearly read a few select words. In this part, the text will create our abstract shapes and textures. The only condition is that no known objects can be created.
Preliminary
Sketches
I had three layouts created for Part B. The first layout, on the left, was based on having the monologue as a texture in the background while highlighting a paragraph and a quote said in the scene. This was my personal favorite of the three I had made but it had too much legible text and I needed to make it more experimental like the project called for.Â
The second layout in the center was supposed to resemble a crack in the wall with a tunnel in the middle created by the monologue but the project called for no objects and a crack does qualify. Although I didn't like this initial sketch I knew there was potential and decided to play with this layout further.
The third layout was supposed to be a texture of rings with an abtract eye in thecenter but it also qualified as an object and it still needed to be pushed further in terms of experimentation.
Final Layout
For the final layout, I decided to use red, black, and blue as the main color palette. Blue for the facade of the "cool girl", red for her pent up anger of pleasing her husband and him betraying her, and black for her dark personality and plan hiding. I used sans serif "Acumin Variable concept" to have no extra details and a clear, clean, friction-less image- just like "cool girls" do.
The layout resembles a tunnel that goes down to the horrible fate of "cool girl". The girl that doesn't fight back and does whatever her lover wants. I decided to use a tunnel shape because it uses a circle. Circles are typically known for their tie to being a safe, friendly shape- this fits the image of the "cool girl". I wanted to corrupt this friendliness and give it an uneasy look. I duplicated the monologue over and over and gave the letters a gradient so it was not clear to read or follow. The uneasiness of using the distorted circle is followed by the red distortion on the top of the piece. The red distortion represents the anger that is rapidly consuming her and her actions, as well as this image of being the "cool girl".Â
